Microfinance at BNP Paribas: 30 years later, what are the challenges?

Written by admin

Which banking professions are involved? What is each person’s role?

Beyond the CSR Department, which has been analyzing, coordinating and steering the microfinance activity since 2012, many Bank entities are involved in this action. Thanks to our various businesses, we can provide them with the financing they need to work on a daily basis.

This is the case of the CIB (Corporate & Institutional Banking) division, which grants bank loans to MFIs in many countries such as India, South Africa, Brazil, the United States or even Vietnam. In terms of direct financing, the Bank can also intervene by investing capital in MFIs. In this case, it is in particular the BNP Paribas Principal Investment teams that are involved alongside the CSR Department.

In another register, BNP Paribas indirectly finances microcredit, by offering its employees and customers solidarity savings products, which are partly invested in MFIs. This is the case of BNP Paribas Asset Management, the Group’s asset management subsidiary, which, thanks to its funds such as BNP Paribas Social Business France and the range Multipar Solidarity, allows individual customers, employees and institutional investors to give meaning to their savings! BNP Paribas Wealth Management also offers this same type of commitment, for example through funds Obli Etheis.

Finally, in the field of sponsorship, the BNP Paribas Foundation and Retail Banking in France allow the deployment of microcredit in priority neighborhoods of urban policy in France. Complementary to this action, the team Volunteering coordination », organizes in collaboration with the Human Resources function of the Group the connection between MFIs and employees or retirees wishing to put their skills at the service of microfinance.

This list is obviously not exhaustive. The strength of a Group such as ours is have a whole range of expertise on which we have relied to advance the subject for 30 years.
